Our History and Our Clients
Our History

Nelson House is a non-profit shelter, established in 1992 following three years of planning and effort by a group of women in the city of Nepean and across the region. Nelson House provides emergency shelter and social services for women and children who are fleeing abuse in their lives.

Our Clients
Our residents come from diverse backgrounds. Often they are economically disadvantaged or are new Canadians who may lack access to support, extended family and friends. They truly are reflective of Ottawa’s diverse community and their stay at Nelson House helps them build a life free of violence for their children and themselves.
We welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse and intersex (LGBTIQ) people at our facility. We have pledged to provide inclusive and non-discriminatory services to anyone who identifies themselves as a woman.
